Singaporeans Who Think Too Highly Of Themselves.
So, the verdict is out. Serangoon Garden Technical School is going to be made into a dorm for foreign workers. Not the expatriate kind of foreign workers, commonly Caucasians, with their high class type of culture, wine drinking every weekend, whizzing down the roads of Singapore in a teeny convertible or one of those Lexus MPVs, blah blah blah. No no no...these are foreign workers. Mainly construction workers, i presume, from developing Asian countries, whom most Singaporean shun.

I am writing this after reading the YAHOO news article on the response of Serangoon Gardens residents on the decisioin made to convert the school into a foreign workers dorm. Granted that the dorm will be located right beside their residence, some uptight people will feel a sense of insecurity. But what irks me was the line,

'"I am fed up!" a woman screamed from her car.'
(http://sg.news.yahoo.com/cna/20081003/tap-077-dormitory-decision-upsets-serang-231650b.html, 5th October 2008). and in general the lines below that too...

Now, why the hell did that woman(interviewed in the news) have to scream. if this happened in Jurong, or some other Middle class estates in Singapore, i am very sure the responses would be much more civilised and rational, less emotional, simply because, i would hope, we are more down-to-earth and understanding. I am just wondering what makes Burghley Drive residents feel they are so special that their residence must not be invaded by foreign workers, unlike other estates in Singapore. Why?? I'm sure the resident are the kind of people with wierd, trying-to-sound-fancy pseudo-Ang Moh names like Clifton, Walter, etc... OK, forgive me for being judgemental..i maybe wrong. i simply do not understand what makes you better than the rest of Singapore.

There simply isn't enough respect for Foreign Workers in Singapore. Their presence is crucial for Singapore's beautiful infrastructure. Burghley Drive people, you sure as hell wouldn't want to work like they (foreign workers) do, would you? Too dirty? Too labor-intensive? I'm afraid my freshly manicured nails will get chipped?

And, just because them foreign workers do not dress up as nicely, talk loudly, or to some, smell funny, the people in Serangoon Gardens, oops i mean, Burghley Drive, (i guess that makes it sound more like an upclass residence huh) cannot and must not be allowed to have contact with them dirty dangerous foreign workers?

I simply do not approve of the childish behaviour of Burghley Drive residents. If you want to move out, as one resident claimed, then go ahead. take all your uppity neighbours with you so you can all drink tea in the afternoons together.

All these foreign workers need is a place to stay. And since the school is vacant and idly taking up space, why not put it to good use. If residents in Jurong and other middle class estates have little qualms about living alongside foreign workers, why should the government make any exception for you people living in Burghley Drive? Because you are more upclass? Kiss My Ass.. you people should learn to appreciate the work done by foreign workers. Without them, you will not have buildings to work in. Your houses wouldn't even be there in the first place. So please, respect them a little. I am sure there are a few residents in Burghley Drive who are not so emotional about this issue..  Kudos to you.

I believe if you respect them, they will respect you in return. Who knows, they may even help you in times of need. Then, YOU will be indebted to them. Hah.

*Haizzz..early morning, piss me off. Sunday morning some more...Haiiyoooooo!!!! Oh well, Good Morning Singapore!!!

Well said.
Those people living in Burghley Drive who detest these foreign workers should be ashamed of themselves.

I think you should eat your own words which are blasted like you are hollier than thou:

1. No one disputes that foreign work permit workers should be treated in a civilised manner including appropriate housing. But surely that doesn't mean we must all embrace them as though they are fellow citizens or potential citizen-PRs. These workers are paid wages better than what they can earn back home, that is if they can even find employment. If they don't come, no sweat as there are others from same or other countries who are in th queue. So what criticality and what nonsensical assertion that Singapore is obligated to them, The reverse is more like it. Or you can't even see through this and the fundamental difference.

Going by what you have said, you cannot be one of many bloggers who have in recent times lamented and sweared on foreign workers for causing overcrowded trains and buses and public spaces. And if you have spare rooms in your house, they deserve to live with you?

Even from an economic and taxpayers' perspective, the land where the vacant school sits is expensive land and use of it to house low-income workers is poor choice especially as the rental charges to the dormitory operators for the school premises are likely to be set at a subsidised sub-market rate to make them affordable for the operators and hence the workers. Why should taxpayers subsidise these?

2. You sounded like some angry economically-deprived person who is using this situation to lay a haves vs have-nots trail to run down those who have worked for the assets which they now deservedly own . Please be honest - you want us to believe that if you are a flat-owner that you will be most happy to welcome these workers to occupy a big portion of the units in your block, to your left and to your right and above and below you, and that you honestly do not mind that it will affect the liveability, rentability or saleability of your unit.

3. The angry lady you saw in the news was fed up and I can empathise with her. Her house in SG is not only unsubsidised by the govt, unlike HDB flats, but she had paid a high premium for it because the estate provides her with a neighbourhood that's tranquil, safe, less congested and because it has been zoned by the govt for low density residence, etc. To the large number of retirees and older residents in SG, their property investments are also their nest eggs for their final golden years. So I can see her and many others being angry out of desperation and seeing a destruction of their asset values, and feeling a sense of being betrayed by the authorities. Many are actually shell shocked by the sudden announcement and the apparently imminent prospect of the proposal being pushed down their throats. SG residents' reaction is no more than understandably human. See what happened in the weekend just past when Tai Hwan and Mei Hwan residents around AMK Av1 are equally vociferous against the exit road which the govt has now proposed. Wait till the other sites are announced soon by the govt, and the reactions that will be forthcoming. The govt has always boasted about its expertise in planning and execution which are touted as one of the justifications for their high salaries. Clearly this situation says otherwise, and people are made to pay the price for their inadequacies. This issue is more than about SG as many more neighbourhoods will soon suffer the same fate. Is it reasonable and fair for people like you and the local press to bash SG residents on ridiculous charges of racialism, class selfishness and elitism. Come to SG and you will not find these in the air. Actually I would say that these charges apply to you. Your words betrayed you. You seem to be angry and deprived and taking this opportunity to bite for your frustrations.

If you continue to push on with your severe knockn-downs of SG and those to follow in other estates, declare your interest, lest you would appear to be have a hidden agenda. Meanwhile, hope you are sleeping well.

From reading what you wrote, you are INDEED reeking of racialism, class selfishness and elitism!!!

Stop viewing other people with a cynical eye. Not everyone is like you, always just thinking of economic considerations and worry about "interest" and "agenda". There are a lot of people who support basic human rights, unlike you who feel proud of exploiting people from poorer nations.

In short, I really want to tell you "FUCK YOU"!!!

What was she fed up with? The foreign workers who need a place to stay or the overpaid ministers whose poor planning resulted in foreign workers having to stay in disused buildings instead of purpose-built accomadation? Or is she fed up with ministers' whose "consultation" is just wayang?

As most of these foreign workers are from India, Pakistan, Banglahdesh, many of us cant tell the difference between them. Majority of them are from India i think. As a woman at 20 year old living in Singapore, I enjoy the one of the best security a country can offer. A check with the molest and rape cases in India is really alarmingly high, 3 rapes in 3 days. Needless to say about molestations, it may go heaven high. I dont know if you remember in recent years, during festive season of X'Mas Eve, New Year Eve, many of us would walk down Orchard Road to feel the atmosphere of wonderful feelings of festive mood. But take a look at crimes committed on these particular nights on Orchard Road, there are many cases reported by female individuals being molested by what they claim dark skinned foreigners. Their tactics is simple, armed with cans of foam sprays, sting the victims eyes, grope all over their body, then flee quickly. Many were caught, near all if not all were foreign workers. Apart from this, crime rate from foreign workers climbed to a 3000 over cases per year. This is really alarmingly high! Imagine 8 over foreign workers violating the law every single day!!! I am saying all are as such, even if we take a look at India, (I am definitely very fortunate not to be born there) molest and rape crimes more than anything else, not all are such felon, but reputations says it all. If they have a better reputation and image, then they deserve a better respect. I say, if u welcome them all live near your home in bishan, you are doing many of us a big favour. But would u live in peace with your wife and daughters??Another thing is, why most local girls, Chinese, Malay, Indian enjoy shopping, eating, hanging out at Chinatown with ease but none of us would really want to go near Serangoon Road? Because of the?? Reputations. Even waiting for traffic lights, we can sense many pairs of 'evil' eyes looking up and down you... a check with my girlfriends, this gesture really scare the h%^# out of us. Lastly, as I always say, if u have good reputations, wherever u go, u are most welcome. Just like most french restaurants forbid Chinamen from entering because of their loudness. I would prefer NOT to live near foreign workers after all the things we hear, see in our daily lives.
